Health Alert for SATEC
There is a virus circulating in our community. A variety of symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, muscle aches and headaches have been reported. The recommendations are to stay home and do not return to school or work for at least twenty-four hours after your symptoms subside.  Please use good hand washing and limit exposure to compromised individuals to reduce the chance of spreading.  Please contact the school nurse if your child is experiencing symptoms so we may monitor the virus.  Thank you.

“Ice Dogs” author, Ms. Terry Lynn Johnson, came and presented to your 5th and 6th graders today.  Ms. Johnson told stories about becoming a writer, about sled dog racing, and her life when she had 18 sled dogs that she cared for and worked with. Ms. Johnson lives in Whitefish Falls, Ontario.  Many thanks to Mrs. Zelazo for setting up this awesome opportunity for our students.

Students learned about setting up a sled dog team and terms used in racing.

Ms. Johnson share her first experience in getting published and about the dog who was center of the article.  6th graders are pictured in their “mock” sled dog race (right).  They learned about the importance of working as a team!

A Message from the ACT 46 Committee:

What is the role of the community in the schools after unification?
The role that the community will have in our schools after unification should see little change. The culture of each school really isn't driven by the school board. It is driven by dedicated parents and townspeople who take an active role in their schools through parent organizations, by volunteering during the school day and for after-school activities, by sponsoring and running events, by coaching sports, directing plays, and teaching about the environment. Those roles and needs will not change.

Will the community still be able to address the school board?
Your ability to address the unified school board directly about issues will not change with unification. The board members of the new unified district will be elected by the voters of the three towns at the same time the merger is voted on.  All board meetings would be open to the public, and contact information for the board would be available on the district web site.
In addition, while the board will be twice the size of most local boards now, and will be overseeing all of the schools in the district, board operations will be the same as they currently are. Concerns that the board could change the structure of the schools, or attendance requirements, etc., are within the power of the boards currently. This unification will have a board made up of local citizens, just like now, and there is no indication that there is any desire to make radical changes to the systems in place. Unification will allow redistribution of resources to provide equity among all of our schools.
