REMOTE Day Due to Imminent Bad Weather

MRUSD schools will Switch to a remote learning day on Tuesday, February 16. Because we know of the storm threat in advance, teachers will facilitate a remote learning day for all students.

Meals will be sent home with students today.

This message from Superintendent Kevin Dirth is to notify you that due to the Imminent Bad weather, all schools in the Maple Run Unified School District will switch to remote learning tomorrow, Tuesday, February 16. This includes Bellows Free Academy St. Albans, Northwest Technical & Career Center, St. Albans Town Educational Center, St. Albans City School, Fairfield Center School, and all preschool and Kindergarten programs.

Please note that there is a chance of more inclement weather later in the week. Should this occur, and we have to close, it will be a regular snow day.

SATEC COVID Update ~
SATEC Entering Remote Learning Platform from 2/16-2/19

A Letter From Superintendent Dr. Dirth and Principal Angela Stebbins

February 15, 2021

Dear SATEC Parents,

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have used 3 criteria to inform us whether we can have students and staff in our schools or whether we should stay home and teach/learn remotely. They are:
Do we have adequate staffing levels?
Are our health and safety practices and routines well established?
Does our collaboration with the Vermont Health Department suggest our community infection rates are low enough that it is safe for us to bring more students back?

Because of several cases that have occurred at SATEC over the last few days, we are not able to meet all of the above. We have many students and staff who are quarantining and waiting for a test. Currently, access to timely COVID tests are impacted due to an increased activity in this area. After consulting with the Department of Health, we feel the only prudent move is to follow the criteria that was set. Therefore, after today, SATEC, grades prek-8, will be implementing remote learning for the remainder of the week. This will give the necessary time for staff and students to get tested. It will also allow for a deep cleaning of the school to ensure the building is a safe and healthy place in which to return. This may reduce the need to go remote at a later time.

As always, it is crucial that everyone do their part by following the rules around COVID. We have found that most of the cases we are seeing could have been prevented if there had been more stringent adherence to the distancing rules. While the schools are doing an excellent job keeping everyone safe, I am afraid it is not always occurring outside our schools. That is causing increased community spread.

I realize this is inconvenient for many of you, and we wish we didn't have to go this route. We understand that continuing to adhere to stringent COVID guidelines is fatiguing, however, our first priority is the safety of our staff and students. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Kevin Dirth

A Letter From Principal Stebbins
February 15, 2021

Greetings SATEC Community,

As you are aware, SATEC has been experiencing an increased number of COVID cases in our school in recent days. We communicated on 2/12/21 that we had two more cases and since then we have one additional positive case to inform you of.

The Department of Health has confirmed that two of our recent COVID cases, after extensive contact tracing, were transmitted at school and connected to our cases from earlier in February. Due to the cases being spread while at school the DOH considers both the additional cases to be an “outbreak”.

While COVID is spreading in the community we are encouraging everyone to continue to follow safety protocols. (i.e. hand washing, maintaining physical distancing, wearing masks).

I want to make sure that our school community was aware of this as it may be announced in the media later today or on Tuesday. The increase in cases, some of which are considered an “outbreak”, along with staffing issues are the primary reasons why SATEC will be moving to a fully remote learning platform from 2/16/21-2/19/21.

Sincerely,
Angela Stebbins

COVID Update from Principal Stebbins

February 12, 2021

Greetings SATEC Families,

I have received information indicating that two members of our school community have tested positive for COVID 19. As part of our Health and Safety measures and in consultation with the Department of Health, we are having our students/staff in the affected class and other students/staff in the school who are considered a close contact move to a remote learning platform until all quarantining requirements have been met.

All staff and students who are involved have been notified via a phone call or direct conversation. If you have not been contacted you or your children are not a close contact and you do not need to quarantine at this time.

We encourage all staff, students, and families to follow all the necessary COVID guidelines (wearing masks, staying home when sick, social distancing, and handwashing) and communicate with one of our nurses if you or your children might have symptoms.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support.

Sincerely,

Angela Stebbins
